For my birthday, I got the Griffin iTalk and lapel mic, enabling me to record voice notes, sounds, etc., from my iPod. I really wanted this so I could record stories of my grandparents to get a sort of “living history” from them. The problem is our 2,500 mile distance. Until we can get together (or until I can convince my family out there to buy their own) I’ve been practicing this device to see how it works.
The iTalk device is great. The recordings are crisp and clear and the mic seems to pick up pretty much anything. Mine is an upgrade from an earlier version which apparently started recording once you plugged it in. In the new version, sound is only recorded when you press the “record” button. A nice feature.
Other features? Well, there really isn’t any other feature, except the button on the top which puts you into the “prepare to record” menu on the iPod. The other wonderful feature is the built-in speaker. For as small as it is, the speaker does a great job. Isaac and Elise had fun playing with the iPod with the iTalk installed, listening to random songs as they pressed various buttons on the interface. The kids also get a kick out of listening to themselves being recorded.
From Griffin’s website, it looks like the iTalk may be discontinued, but I found one on Amazon.com for a good price (beats Apple.com).
