Hike To Kolob

by Derek—2004.03.28 @ 1919

Saturday we decided to take a hike to Kolob--a 28 mile drive south of Cedar City. Kolob is the northern most point of Zion's National Park in Southern Utah and is envied as one of the most beautiful parks in the United States.

We paid the $10 entrance fee and drove up the canyon. From the freeway (I-15), you can't even tell there is a georgous park just on the other side of the mountain range. As we drove of the peak, we were breathtaken by the towering red cliffs and box canyons. The canyons were a little deceiving; I couldn't tell when they ended. Because of the coloring of the cliffs, the many canyons were hidden until you drove past them.

At the end of the drive there was a parking spot and the beginning of a short (0.5 mile) hike. The hike takes you over a bluff where you can get a full view of Zion's Park looking south. We had a lot of fun.

Elise was a trooper; she hiked--ran, rather--almost the entire hike, where she could, and walked the rest. She fell a few times, but got right up and hiked her way on. It was a fun family outing!
