We were so excited last night to have a visit from the Fire Department. We received a notice on our door on Monday stating that our neighborhood was conducting a “Community Fire Drill.” At first, I was a little apprehensive as the flyer warned of a drill and the need to report directly to a group meeting area, signing in with the Fire Marshall, and having a ready evacuation plan. Melissa and I dutifully prepared our kids for the event and talked about fire safety for the next few days.
Elise and Isaac were genuinely excited about having a fire truck come to our house and see them “blow fire.” I think it helped that on Sunday, I made a small fire out of match sticks… At the appointed hour, the fire truck didn’t arrive and Melissa and I were worried the drill wasn’t going to happen. We were mostly concerned for the kids who were so excited. Thankfully, however, the truck arrived, but the community fire drill turned out to be more of a show-and-tell with the firemen. They turned on their lights, but not the siren, and handed out cheap plastic fire hats, coloring books, and crayons to all the kids.
Elise got to sit inside the fire truck and we got a brief tour of the exterior of the vehicle. It was fun, and the kids truly enjoyed it.
