The 9mm

Leistungsabzeichen

The “German Badge” has proven more difficult than I originally thought. Today, however, was a bright point in the challenge: the 9mm. I got word yesterday that a firing range had been reserved and I was invited to attend. The organizer told me that my scores in the other events were passing in the next age bracket (which I will be in this December), so I was eligible to shoot.

The range was down in Maryland. I got lost. Luckily I had my cell phone and was set aright. But by the time I made it down, I was an hour late, and I think everyone was done qualifying. By this time, I was a little frustrated at being lost so I stepped up to the firing line, received my instruction, and shot.

Five out of five!

That’s pretty much it. Five shots, three targets. You have to hit the first, low target once and then two “high” targets twice. The first shot is supposedly more difficult because you have to fire the handgun without it being cocked, so there is a potential of the muzzle moving. With the next shots, the gun is already single-cocked, so it’s a soft shot. It was pretty quick; kind of anticlimactic, but it’s over! If all of my track and field events are scored, the only thing left is the 20k road march, but that won’t be until March ‘06.
