Our bus drove in from the Jersey side (I think), so my first glimpse of the city was from across the channel where I was able to see the famous skyline. Picking out major landmarks like the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building were easy enough, but beyond that it was a jungle of skyscrapers.
We went under the river through a tunnel, reminding me of the movie Daylight. Barf; enclosed spaces. When we finally emerged, we were instantly into a traffic jam. The one block we needed to go took over 30-minutes. Welcome to New York City!
I went to New York City on a “business trip” with the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own.” Our annual concerts in the city included an appearance at Avery Fisher Hall and at Trinity Church. Both venues were wonderful and we performed to sold-out houses.
While at Trinity Church, I ran across the block to see and take photos of “Ground Zero.” It was pretty phenomenal. Trinity Church received very little damage for being so close to the twin towers and locals affectionately refer to it as “the little chapel that stood.”
After our performances, we had some free time in the evenings. I went with some friends down the street from our hotel to Times Square where I saw two shows: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Joe Brook’s In My Life. I have reviews to both shows here on our site.
In the few days I spent in the Big Apple, I had tasted enough. Spending a few days and nights in the city and you start to feel the grime in your lungs (and the congestion leaves much to be desired).
