While full reviews are still coming in, current previews agree that iWeb can be used without a .Mac account. This is good news for many who have their own server solutions. Here is what Apple says:
iWeb publishing requires Internet and webserver access (.Mac recommended).
These initial reviews confirm that the code is XHTML compliant, but there is some code bloat, especially with the CSS. Apparently the code isn’t especially beautiful, nor is the structure hierarchical, but I guess that isn’t the point, exactly. The beauty is that it’s a desktop WYSIWYG blog/podcast/photo web design application, and it does it effortlessly. Linking all your media is a great benefit.
My initial excitement has been squashed a little. I was looking at the possibility of getting a .Mac account, but the downsides are not worth the transition. For starters, .Mac costs $100/year, and limits you on storage space (1 GB currently, although you can pay for more storage). Bandwidth is also controlled.
It would be nice to see if this could work, especially if it made writing and publishing easier.
