Got Internet But No Friends?

by Derek—2006.06.25 @ 1640

Don’t have many close friends? Find yourself using the internet more and more? Wondering why you spend more time chatting online than in person? According to a recent study, you have a problem. The basic idea is: using the internet is not a replacement for reality.

The number of people who say they have no one to talk to about important matters has more than doubled, according to a new study by sociologists at Duke University and the University of Arizona. The average number of people who respondents said they discuss important matters fell from about three to two. The more insular population is increasingly reliant on family members as confidants, the researchers say.

According to the study, “This change indicates something that’s not good for our society…” I hope they didn’t spend too much money figuring this one out.

There are a couple of other correlations to be made from overuse and improper use of the internet:

  • increased information ≠ increased knowledge
  • increased knowledge ≠ increased wisdom
  • increased internet usage ≠ increased friendships
